Po­lice cel­e­brate win at K-9 tri­als

Of­fi­cer Joseph Ilg and his K-9 part­ner Iko took home the rank of “top dog” at the East Coast K-9 Tri­als in New Tripoli, Le­high County.

EX­ETER >> Ex­eter’s K-9 po­lice of­fi­cers have some rea­sons to cel­e­brate.

The po­lice de­part­ment re­cently an­nounced that Of­fi­cer Joseph Ilg and his K-9 part­ner Iko took home the rank of “top dog” at the East Coast K-9 Tri­als in New Tripoli, Le­high County, fin­ish­ing as the over­all win­ners at the tri­als.

Ilg and Iko com­peted against more than a dozen K-9 teams in dis­ci­plines like K-9 call off, pa­trol func­tions, and speed.

Ilg, a 13-year po­lice vet­eran of the de­part­ment and K-9 Iko, a oneyear-old Bel­gian Ma­li­nois/Ger­man Shep­ard mix, have been work­ing pa­trolling the streets for only eight months. In that short time, they have man­aged to not only win sev­eral com­pe­ti­tions, but have also have made sev­eral ar­rests.

Of­fi­cer Ilg and K-9 Iko make up a quar­ter of the de­part­ment’s K-9 unit. All dogs are trained in pa­trol func­tions, as well as nar­cotics or ex­plo­sive de­tec­tion.
