Thespians have fun with ‘Sweeney Todd’

The Thespians put on their biggest show back i n March an d that Rockmart dramas department has ever attempted.

Students took a risk by performing the musical “Sweeney Todd,” the story of the demon barber of Fleet Street, exacting his revenge on those who took away his love and forced him into exile.

After the play, James Schroeder addressed what it was like to put on a controversial play like this.

“Well to begin with, Noah Green brought it up to me and I thought there was no way we was going able to pull this off. But we did some research and saw that some other schools in Georgia had put it on before,” Schroeder said. “We found a school edition that got approved. Everyone in the cast was down for it.”

Schroeder said he was happy with the results as the curtains came down on the first night on March 23.

“I want to say I can’t believe they pulled this off, but I can because our kids are so talented,” he said.

Alli Streetman, who plays the role of Mrs. Lovett, said she was thrilled to be a part of the production.

“The memory that I will carry away from this experience is that tonight was a remarkable show and also one of the hardest shows we ever have attempted but we did it successfully,” she said on opening night.

Evan Cl a y pl a y e d Pirelli in the show and spoke on what it was like to play as his character and had only one thing to say: “it was a lot of fun.”

“I just really loved being on stage hitting those high notes because it’s just really fun to watch the audience get wowed,” he said.

The show ended in a standing ovation for the thespians and could be described as a experience of a life time.

Cast members included Noah Green as Sweeney Todd, Streetman as Mrs. Lovett, Ethan Gober as Anthony, Anna Snider as Joanna, Branson Lewis as Toby, Gage Nesbitt as Judge Turpin, Adrian Locklear as Beadle,

Evan Clay as Pirelli, Ansley Wynn as the beggar woman, and Sean Williams as Fogg.

The production was directed on by Schroeder and Stevi Reeves.
