New job teach­ing next gen­er­a­tion of EMTs for county com­mis­sioner

Polk County Com­mis­sioner Chuck Thax­ton started a new job at the be­gin­ning of the school year, tak­ing on a full-time role as an ed­u­ca­tor at the Polk County Col­lege and Ca­reer Academy.

Thax­ton, who said he’s al­ready served as an ed­u­ca­tor be­fore, said that his new role teach­ing the cour­ses needed to get stu­dents into emer­gency med­i­cal tech­ni­cian pro­grams isn’t a new one for him.

He was pre­vi­ously the op­er­a­tions man­ager for Floyd EMS in Polk County and an EMS Cap­tain.

“I’ll still be do­ing some work for Floyd when­ever they need some­one to help out,” Thax­ton said.

He said be­fore t he school year started that he was look­ing for­ward to get­ting back into the class­room with stu­dents.

Thax­ton, who serves as a Dis­trict 2 com­mis­sioner, also is a Rockmart High School as­sis­tant foot­ball coach and has pre­vi­ous teach­ing ex­pe­ri­ence.

“It’s not all that new of a role for me, but I’m glad to be part of the Polk School Dis­trict,” he said.

Thax­ton’s full-time role with the Col­lege and Ca­reer Academy makes him the sec­ond ed­u­ca­tor on the Board of Com­mis­sion­ers. Jen­nifer Hulsey, a mid­dle school teacher, also rep­re­sents Dis­trict 2 as a com­mis­sioner.
