Caroline routs Frederick, stays alive in tourney
RISING SUN — Opening with a 6-0 lead, the District 6 champ Caroline Junior League baseball all-stars rolled to a 14-2, five-inning rout of District 2 titleist Frederick National on Wednesday night in the state tournament.
P.J. Gunther, who pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed one hit while striking out three, got the win in relief of Chris Curler, who threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings as the team’s starter. Zack Stanley pitched a scoreless fifth to end the contest and keep Caroline (6-2) alive in the elimination bracket.
Chad Willoughby doubled, scored twice, and drove in two runs for Caroline; teammates Jayden Watkins, Nate Haschen, Mason Pate, Hunter Wolfe, and Adam Boyles each had a hit and an RBI. J.B. Brown singled, scored a run, and notched two RBIs; Jeremy Bedford walked twice and drove in one run, and Tucker Brown added a single to the Caroline attack.
Caroline outhit Frederick 10-1 in the win.
Caroline, which lost in extra innings Sunday to tournament host Rising Run, played another elimination game, against District 1, Thursday evening; results were not known at press time.
