LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Country before party
Recently, there was a front page story about Congressman Harris visiting a company in Cambridge. I recalled his visit to my company in 2010 when he stopped by my office unannounced. He said he was running for Congress. He said he would work on behalf of small businesses. It did not take long in conversation before I realized he knew almost nothing about how businesses operate, but he seemed eager so I offered him a tour of our vegetable packing plant. He declined. I never heard from him again. In fact, he has been practically absent for eight years in properly representing our district.
What galls me most is receiving flyers from his office these past three months noting all his “accomplishments.” The latest reads, “Andy Harris fights to protect our great treasure.” It’s just not true. Time after time he has voted against legislation that would protect our waterways and voted for dismantling protections.
As a registered Independent for the past 50 years who votes for the person and not the party, I’ve tried to keep an open and curious mind and travel to the beat of my own drum. I believe we are still a country of moderates and saddened to see how moderates of both parties have been marginalized by the far right and the far left.
In this upcoming election I will exercise my privilege in this great country and vote for Jesse Colvin to represent our district. I also plan to support Larry Hogan, Addie Eckardt and Johny Mautz, who show up, stand up and earn our votes. I may not agree with every position they take, but know them as individuals who truly work to better our communities by bringing people together in all of our best interests.
Harris dismissive of women
This is the first time I have written a letter to the editor of a newspaper before, but I feel compelled to do so now. Recently Andy Harris commented in a radio inter view on the allegations of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. He said “she is a troubled woman... and she admits it, she has psychological problems.” He called her claim false, and a complete character assassination. His dismissive attitude is disrespectful to all women who have been victims of sexual assault, or harassment, or know one who has. Harris voted no on reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
It is for these reasons I think the women of this district, regardless of political party, should vote Andy Harris out and cast their vote for his opponent Jesse Colvin.
