A financial advisor doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist. But for Brett Ramsey, owner of Novus Wealth Advisors with three locations in the greater Indianapolis, IN area, actually being one turned out to be a big boost. “It is a bit of an unusual backgrou

Rocket Scientist Becomes Financial Advisors

Ramsey worked at NASA while earning his bachelor’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering before working another decade in manufacturing for General Electric Company. While working on his masters at Duke, a classmate who worked at GE Capital offered Ramsey a job in the financial services industry. He took it, and began sales and marketing for a large, national insurance company.

That experience proved to be a productive laboratory. Ramsey discovered that he was more interested in working as an independent financial practitioner than as a salesman distributing financial products through a national network. In 2002, he earned his license and launched his own firm, Novus Wealth Advisors, providing wealth advising, insurance services and retirement planning.

Ramsey knew there was ample territory to explore – especially in the atmosphere of the senior market. He finds that far too many older Americans are floating adrift without anything to get them where they need to be.

“With my experience in the insurance side of things, I ran into two types of people: Those who already were well established financially and had the means to maintain their lifestyle in retirement, and those who were not. I realized I could help some of them, even though it is really difficult for someone in their 70s to make up that much ground to solve financial problems. So I made an intentional decision to start working with people earlier in the retirement process.”

And this is where his career as a financial advisor has settled into orbit. He works with employers, providing education to their employees regarding retirement benefits and the retirement process. Ramsey’s approach isn’t designed to meet the needs of high net worth individuals, focusing instead on the financial needs of folks from middle class America.

This is the sector where he intends to remain, by increasing his firm’s work site education initiative through employers.

“We are 12 years into this – and we have really figured out who it is that we help,” Ramsey said. “We help people in that space prior to retirement. Work site education allows us to come in, meet more people, and start working with them much earlier in their retirement planning cycle, assisting them to make these important life decisions.”
