We can make Amer­ica brave again

Last month I at­tended a re­union, a recog­ni­tion event for the coaches of the 1980-1981 state cham­pion teams at Myr­tle Beach High School. These coaches, Doug Shaw and Leroy Rain­bow, among oth­ers, helped shape a long run of state cham­pi­onship teams.

I re­al­ized as we cel­e­brated their work that these coaches served at a time of tremen­dous tur­moil in our school sys­tems. Clearly, there had to be some quiet pol­i­tics go­ing on be­hind the scenes. Dur­ing this cel­e­bra­tion of the gifts given to us by our coaches, I re­al­ized that we for­mer team­mates are now in places of lead­er­ship as our coaches once were. That we are the per­sons looked to to make those day-by­day choices that co­a­lesce into an Amer­i­can mo­ment of our own mak­ing.

We can choose to make Amer­ica brave again. To look be­yond, and work be­yond the pres­sure to let fear be our guide into a world of in­evitable
