Please help to bring back the Taos Pueblo Pow Wow in 2019
The Taos InterfaithIntercultural Alliance is deeply sorry to learn of the cancellation of the 2018 Taos Pueblo Pow Wow. This annual event is an important time of gathering for Native people from all over the continent. Members of Native tribes throughout the country have gathered in Taos for 32 years to compete in traditional dance competitions and celebrate cultural pride.
The Taos Alliance thanks the powwow committee for decades of wonderful powwows: for the drummers, the dancers in their traditional regalia, for vendors from other New Mexico pueblos and tribes, and for the Native visitors from many parts of this continent.
Each year, visitors from around the world attend the powwow, and the cancellation for 2018 means that fewer people can learn from its pageantry and beauty. Many businesses in town will have less income, and the town will have less tax revenue to spend on much-needed town services.
We know that the serious financial commitment, complex organization and staging of the powwow is demanding volunteer work that takes deep dedication and long weeks and months of planning, work and communication. We hope that Taos County, the town of Taos, businesses and other organizations will join us in actively supporting next year’s powwow. In addition to much-appreciated financial support, you can help prepare the grounds, assist with the Zero Waste Initiative, spread the word about the event and invite others to attend.
We are a community of many cultures and faiths, and when there is an event that invites people to learn more about the cultures of Native people, it is our community responsibility to be supportive with our time, energy and cash donations. We invite you to join us in support of the 2019 Taos Pueblo Pow Wow.
