Eight-year-old injured in ATV crash, woman facing charges
An 8-year-old child riding an ATV sustained serious injuries Monday night (Sept.
24) when the off-road, openair vehicle was struck by a vehicle driven by an Arroyo Hondo woman. She has been charged with aggravated DUI, leaving the scene of a crash and other charges.
Taos County Undersheriff Steve Miera said deputies and medical personnel were dispatched to the crash on Straight Arrow Road in El Prado around 7:15 p.m. Monday.
While en route, a dispatcher informed them that family members of the injured
8-year-old were taking the child to Holy Cross Hospital.
Taos County Emergency Services Chief Chris Medina said the injured child was stabilized before being flown to another medical center for further treatment, but he was unsure as to which facility that would be.
Neither he nor undersheriff Miera had an updated status as to the child’s condition as of press time Wednesday (Sept. 26).
At the scene, deputies identified and charged 46-year-old Lucia Trujillo of Arroyo Hondo as the driver of the vehicle that struck the child. Oficers administered a blood test at the scene to determine the woman’s blood-alcohol concentration, but official results are pending analysis by a state crime lab.
Trujillo faces additional charges for crashing through a fence and failing to give immediate notice of the accident.
She is being held at the Taos County Adult Detention Center.
