Abeyta Set­tle­ment money OKed by town

The Taos town coun­cil voted Tues­day (Sept. 25) to ac­cept $2.8 mil­lion from the Bureau of Recla­ma­tion to de­sign and plan new mu­nic­i­pal wells. Un­der the Abeyta Set­tle­ment, the town must move some of its wells fur­ther away from Taos Pue­blo lands. The vote passed 3 to 2, with coun­cilors Darien Fer­nan­dez and Pas­cual­ito Maes­tas vot­ing against ac­cept­ing the money. The de­sign phase of the Abeyta wells pro­ject should last 18 months and the town should be re­ceiv­ing an­other $15 mil­lion for con­struc­tion.
