Vote ‘yes’ on bond for Blue Bus

As a Blue Bus rider (I live in Questa), I was heartened to read former councilman Alfred Herrera’s piece in “Letters” to remind Taoseños that a “yes”for this bond issue will not raise taxes one iota, and to encourage supporting the bond to fund the North Central Regional Transit District, keeping in mind that public transit often is the only option for some.

This is an important issue for those of us who, for whatever reason, do not own a personal car and have the same needs as car owners for access to healthy groceries, adequate health care, employment, volunteer opportunities, social connections, you name it. In addition, in this overly fossil-fueled anthropocene age we’re in, which profoundly impacts the very landscape of our planet and all its inhabitants, it behooves us all to consider leaving our cars parked as much as possible to use alternative transportation, whether it’s walking, biking, or utilizing public transit.

I urge everyone to support reauthorization of the current funding of the bus system, whether car owners or not, and to pick up a bus schedule (available at the library) and hop on one of Taos’ wonderful (and free! how lucky is that?!?) Blue Buses to experiment and connect with fellow riders as we reduce the traffic jams and liberate ourselves from the enslavement of the mind that sees private car ownership as necessary as breathing to even live in this world.

It’s not. (I’m writing this after a walk through that bottleneck area between Smith’s and Civic Plaza Dr. where the air most daylight hours any season in Taos can make a person nearly keel over from the carbon monoxide!). Painted blue as our often gorgeous turquoise to royal-blue skies here in Northern New Mexico skies, the Blue Bus is beautiful, and I hope its ridership will increase as we steadily decrease the use of private vehicles, lessening our traffic jams and pollution in Taos.
