The Taos Lady Tigers closed out their 2018 regular season at home Thursday (Nov. 1) with a celebration of their seniors: Delaney Galligan, Estrella Madrid, Maria Elena Martinez and Faith Powell.

In her heartfelt address to the four girls, junior Laura Trujillo spoke on behalf of the rest of the players, telling the seniors: “You’ve led this team through hard times on and off the court.”

Together they created “a team that is more like a family,” Estrella Madrid said of the varsity volleyball squad in her farewell remarks.

Faith Powell remembered eighth-grade and the devastation of not seeing her name on the list for the middle school team—only to discover that she’d been selected to play up with the high school. She arrived the first day of practice in roller-blade knee pads and cut-off jeans, and credits the coaches from transforming her “from a baby giraffe” to “one heck of a volleyball player.”

And that she is. Powell had 325 kills this season – driving the ball straight to the floor in attacks other teams couldn’t answer – and was the district leader by a wide margin.

Senior Delaney Galligan called Coach Migs (Miguel Quintana) “one of the funniest adults” she’s ever known, and acknowledged the impact of his constant reminders to “keep working on the little things” and “burning her ships” – a phrase that refers to the martial practice of being so committed to a course of action that one destroys the path of retreat.

The Tigers ended their regular season 7-13 with plenty to look forward to next season. The JV girls put on a fine performance against Española. They took the first set and, after a long but lost second set, were leading the third when their game was called for time.
