Knights pull out win in OT
TOWAMENCIN — A 27-yard field goal in overtime by Matt Ammendola followed by a big defensive stop earned North Penn a thrilling, come-frombehind 19-16 win over West Catholic Friday night in a non-league battle at Crawford Stadium.
The Knights cashed in on their offensive series in OT with a field goal by Ammendola and the defense followed by forcing a 4th-and-goal from the eight, and an incompletion by Burrs quarterback Antwain McCollum ended the game.
The Knights had a chance to win it late in the fourth, but a missed 21-yard field goal by Ammendola left the score tied 16 apiece with a minute and 53 seconds to go.
Down by seven at the half, North Penn tied the game late in the third quarter, as Nick Isabella rumbled 59 yards up the middle on a quick dive.
The Knights fought back after a sluggish first half.
All nine first-half points for the Knights came off the foot of Ammendola.
The senior booted field goals of 37, 21 and 30 yards to keep the Knights within a touchdown at the half.
However, North Penn drives kept stalling inside the 25, forcing the Knights to rely on Ammendola to salvage three points.
Four times, North Penn could not convert a third down into a first, and in addition, Ammendola was wide on a 29-yard field goal attempt and the Knights also had a fumble in their own territory.
After trailing 6-0, West Catholic went ahead for the first time on a 82-yard strike from quarterback Antwain McCollum to wide receiver Ahkil Crumpton, followed by a two-point conversion run by Calil Wortham, making it 8-6 early in the second quarter.
Following the NP turnover, the Burrs increased their lead on a sensational 28-yard run by McCollum and a twopoint run by the Burrs QB to stretch the margin to 16-6.
The Knights marched downfield on the running of Nyfease West, but an incompletion on third down forced them to settle for another field goal, leaving it 16-9 at the break.
