50 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic Vol. 1 No. 29 Thursday, July 21, 1966

The Pea Ridge Jaycees are sponsoring a community fair to be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and 6. There will be a beauty contest with three different age categories, free merchandis­e drawing, carnival, big downtown parade, touring caravan to publicize the event and climaxed with a street dance on Saturday night.

The Pea Ridge Jaycees are sponsoring three beauty contests to be held in conjunctio­n with the community fair, Friday, Aug. 5. more entries are needed in each category and all parents wishing to enter their children in the 3 to 4, or the 5 to 6 year-old groups are requested to contact Mrs. Larry Hanner or Mrs. Royle Carnes immediatel­y. These categories will be judged without hats and gloves.

The Pea Ridge Fire Dept. has been called out five times this week.

40 Years Ago Pea Ridge Graphic-Scene Vol. 11 No. 29 Wednesday, July 21, 1976

The Pea Ridge Little League All Stars began district tournament play in a game against the Springdale All Stars Tuesday at Northwest Park in Rogers. Players and coaches include Carl Pearson, Todd Verge, Kurt Simrell, Bruce Schooley, Fred Sutton Jr. Steve Chasteen, Steve Clark, Robbie Taylor, Roger Tillman, Danny Stroud, Roger Davis, Kevin Singer, Greg Stival, Jimmy Wright and Doug Huston; and Clint Schooley and Jim Chasteen, coaches; and Jim Schumacher, manger.

The Pea Ridge School board, meeting in special session Monday night, reviewed and approved final architectu­ral plans prepared by Rogers architect Perry L. Butcher for remodellin­g the Assembly Hall building.

Gwen Hickman, a 1976 graduate of Pea Ridge High School, has received a National PTA Award for “Excellence in the Cultural Arts.” She submitted a water color for the exhibit “Spirit of ’76 — Miracle of America.”

Eighteen former fair queens gathered at last week’s Pea Ridge Fair including Nedra McGinnis Bolain, 1950; Mary Lee Dent Miller, 1955; JoAnn Putman Boggs, 1956; Joyce Widders Hileman, 1958; Lela Patton Daniel, 1959; Jane Wilkerson Joyner, 1960; Betty Self Smyth, 1962; Jane McKinney Cooley, 1963; Cheryl Adcock Webb, 1964; Nancy Smith Roller, 1967; Penny Hall Schwitters, 1970; Dawn Winter, 1971; Melanie McClain, 1975; Geneva Morgan Guyll, 1976; Diana Hanner Lyons, 1977; Mary Mariano, 1980; Christine Bloxham Skaggs, 1982; and Lisa Anderson, 1984.

Heather Lynn Henson and Chad Lovestad were named Tiny Tot king and queen at the Pea Ridge Fair Wednesday July 9, 1986. Four-year-old Heather is the daughter of Billy and Vicki Henson, Pea Ridge, and 5-year-old Chad is the son of Bob and Raenita Lovestad, also of Pea Ridge.

Rogers Easton and Dovie Crabtree were the oldest gent and oldest lady at the Pea Ridge Fair.

20 Years Ago The TIMES of Northeast Benton County Vol. 31 No. 29 Thursday, July 18, 1996

The Washburn branch of First Independen­t Bank of Seligman, Mo., was robbed Monday at gunpoint. A spokesman for the Barry County Sheriff’s Department said about $31,000 was taken. There were no injuries.

The Pea Ridge Community Fair co-chairmen Ruth Talburt and Virgie Hazelton declared the 47th annual fair a great success.

Reigning Miss Pea Ridge Zabrina Gypsy Grigg said amazement was her reaction when she learned she had won the Miss Pea Ridge pageant.

An Air Force staff sergeant, Larry MacTaggart, who graduated from Pea Ridge High School in 1976 has been decorated with the Meritoriou­s Service medal.

Crowds braved the heat Wednesday through Sunday for the 57th annual Pea Ridge Fair. Heather Marlow was crowned Miss Pea Ridge 2006.

The Pea Ridge Booster Club will hold a Golf Tournament Aug. 4 on Big Sugar Golf Course.

Community First Bank Board of Directors, members and officers grabbed shovels and broke ground for the new building, which should be completed by spring according to builder Lester Hall.

Jerry Burton, alderman, announced plans to run for mayor.
