Cubs outlast Nationals to take Game 5 of NLDS
Addison Russell had two doubles and four RBIs as Chicago beat Washington, 9-8, in Game 5 of the NLDS on Thursday night to advance to the NLCS, where they will face the Dodgers on Saturday.
Michael Taylor hit a three-run home run to give the Nationals a 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the second. Taylor hit the go-ahead grand slam for Washington in the eighth inning of Game 4 to lead the Nationals to a victory.
The Cubs battled back in the top of the third as Russell logged an RBI on a groundout and Willson Contreras scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Russell gave the Cubs the lead with a two-run double in the top of the fifth. Chicago wasn’t done as Javier Baez struck out, but made it to first on a passed ball while Russell came in to score. Jay was hit by a pitch to score another run as the Cubs took a 7-4 lead.
Taylor added an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Nationals deficit to 9-8.
