Airport narrows public safety head search
It will interview the three finalists after initially wanting to choose on Thursday.
The Wilkes-barre/scranton International Airport has narrowed its search for a new public safety director to three finalists, an airport official said.
The airport board was scheduled to appoint a new public safety director at its meeting Thursday, according to its agenda. The board decided to personally interview the finalists, airport Director Carl Beardsley Jr. said.
Beardsley declined to identify them.
“We are determining the interview times right now,” he said.
He does not know when the board will appoint someone, he said.
The airport needs a new public safety director because Gary Vogue resigned as of
July 19 after only 3½ months on the job. Vogue replaced retired George Bieber on April 3, but never quit his job as director of the state police tactical operations division as airport officials expected. He worked both jobs until his resignation. In late July, the board appointed Bieber as interim public safety director.
In other business, the board:
Heard Beardsley say 7,396 people boarded flights out of the airport in August, down 72.6% from August 2019. Departures rose from 6,969 in July.
Heard airport Engineering Director Stephen Mykulyn report the reconstruction of the main airport access road will begin next spring.
Awarded Thyssenkrupp Elevator Corp. of Allentown a $159,753 contract to maintain elevators for the next three years. The company submitted the only valid proposal. Board Vice Chairman Tim Mcginley objected because the proposal was much higher than the approximately $104,000 charged by Kone Corp. the last three years. He favored seeking new bids, but board members David Pedri, Jerry Notarianni, Chris Chermak and Lee Ann Mcdermott voted to award the contract.
Honored maintenance employee Gene Orzello for 15 years of outstanding service. Orzello started at the airport Aug. 8, 2005, Beardsley said.
