Of­fi­cer charged in tire slash­ings

A Pittston po­lice of­fi­cer was charged Thurs­day with a felony count of crim­i­nal mis­chief af­ter be­ing im­pli­cated in a se­ries of tire slash­ings late last month.

Dion E. Fer­nan­des, 44, of Avoca, is charged with the sin­gle felony count in a com­plaint filed in the of­fice of Mag­is­te­rial District Judge Alexan­dra Kokura Kravitz.

Pittston Mayor Mike Lom­bardo pre­vi­ously said Fer­nan­des, a full-time of­fi­cer for the city Po­lice Depart­ment, is ac­cused of slash­ing the tires of sev­eral ve­hi­cles on Main Street the night of Aug. 29.

Lom­bardo de­scribed it as an al­co­hol-re­lated in­ci­dent and said the slash­ings ap­peared to be di­rected at ran­dom ve­hi­cles. A date for Fer­nan­des’ ar­raign­ment had not im­me­di­ately been set.
