Officer charged in tire slashings
A Pittston police officer was charged Thursday with a felony count of criminal mischief after being implicated in a series of tire slashings late last month.
Dion E. Fernandes, 44, of Avoca, is charged with the single felony count in a complaint filed in the office of Magisterial District Judge Alexandra Kokura Kravitz.
Pittston Mayor Mike Lombardo previously said Fernandes, a full-time officer for the city Police Department, is accused of slashing the tires of several vehicles on Main Street the night of Aug. 29.
Lombardo described it as an alcohol-related incident and said the slashings appeared to be directed at random vehicles. A date for Fernandes’ arraignment had not immediately been set.
