West Windsor has eye on the prize

The West Windsor Little League All-Stars got a taste of success when they won the District 12 title for 11-year-olds last summer.

Now, can they turn it into a 12-year-old crown for the first time since 2010?

“Whether it translates or not, I don’t know,” manager Mick Callahan said. “The bottom line is we’re going to do whatever we can do to control our own destiny when we step on that field.”

That journey starts on Friday night when West Windsor hosts Cranbury-Plainsboro in an opening-round game with the winner advancing to face Robbinsville.

Callahan likes what his team is offering.

“This team is like family,” he said. “They’re really tight. We do a lot of things well. They can keep it loose, but yet, they understand if we get into them a little bit, they know when they need to start turning it on.”

When they turn it on, this team is one of the favorites.

“You want your lineup strong 1 to 13, so anytime you put them in you have a good core 1 to 9,” Callahan said. “To have a guy hit a line drive with runners on base, you need it. That’s what baseball’s about. You put the other team in a hole and it puts your team up.”
