TRENTON » A man on the run following a Ewing burglary was arrested in the capital city after a foot chase and tussle that left two cops injured.

Barry Phox, 47, of Vineland, is charged with offenses in Ewing and Trenton after he allegedly stole tools from a recycling shop on Calhoun Street, then punched a city cop in the jaw.

Officials say Trenton cops were sent to help catch a burglary suspect near the intersection of Southard Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 7 a.m. Tuesday. City cops were given a description of a suspect being chased by Ewing police.

Trenton cops then saw Phox — who matched the suspect’s description — running through the Donnelly Homes housing complex, according to officials who say Phox ignored police commands and refused to stop.

Phox eventually encountered an 8-foot fence, and that’s when flight mode became fight mode.

When a cop caught up to him, officials say, Phox turned around and hit Officer Domenic Tuccillo in the jaw.

Tuccillo then used pepper spray to subdue Phox to the point where he could place him in handcuffs, which eventually happened after a brief struggle.

Tuccillo was cleared to return to duty after medical attention, but Officer Michael Turner injured his achilles tendon during the foot chase and requires additional hospital treatment.

Phox did not require medical attention aside from treatment due to the pepper spray.

In Trenton, Phox is charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest and obstructing the administration of law. In Ewing, he is charged with burglary.

Officials say Phox stole tools from work trucks that were parked at Mercer Wrecking & Recycling, which sparked the foot chase.
