Spending in elections

The Trentonian (Trenton, NJ) - - OPINION -

I’ve often thought about winning the Mega Million or Powerball jackpot and what I would do with the money. The recent New Jersey elections answer my question. I would run for New Jersey Senator. Money No Object. What was Bob Hugin thinking spending Millions to win a senate seat? How many terms would he have to serve to recoup that investment?

Just by salary, which starts at $174,000, it would be 5.74 years for each million spent. Most senators who make that salary are worth millions because they are limited in what salaried income they can make outside of their Senate salary, but not limited on what they can earn in non-salaried income, like company profits, dividends and investments.
