Buchanan topples Arroyo Grande
Buchanan High used big plays Friday night to glide past visiting Arroyo Grande 48-17 in the Central Section Division I football quarterfinals.
Three of the Bears’ touchdown plays covered 60 yards or more, including a 62-yard rush from running back Kendall Milton.
“When we break those big runs, we get in our minds how good of a team we can be if we all work together and put in that same effort,” said Milton, who scored three times after scoring twice a week ago against Clovis West.
Bears coach Matt Giordano said that he was happy with the way that his offense was able to generate chunk plays. “We know that we have the players that are capable of making big plays, which is good to see especially in a playoff platform where you know the opponent is very good and we can still pull off big gains and big plays like that.”
Giordano said secondseeded Buchanan (10-2) will have to play with the same sense of urgency in order to get past No. 3 Liberty-Bakersfield in the semifinals next week back at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Bears won 28-13 at Liberty on Sept. 7.
“We have to continue to stay humble and stay hungry. We got to learn from this one and understand that our goal is to just go 1-0. All the records go out the window. It’s whoever plays the best on Friday nights moves on and so that is our goal.”
