D.C. Approves Mayoral School Control
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty won final approval from the D.C. Council to take control of the city’s public schools.
The council voted to reduce the Board of Education’s authority and put Fenty in charge of the school superintendent and the system’s operating budget and $2.3 billion capital program.
Fenty (D) still needs Congress to change the city’s Home Rule Charter before he can assume complete authority over the 55,000-student system. Mayoral aides said they foresee no roadblocks.
