It’s In­di­anapo­lis when I was 9 years old, and you can’t go back there.” For Richard Peck, home is Illi­nois, and he’s been back plenty, most no­tably in A Long Way From Chicago, the New­bery Medal win­ner A Year Down Yon­der and Fair Weather. On the Wings of He­roes is set in small-town Illi­nois dur­ing World War II, and it’s the most overtly home­sick of all Peck’s books, per­haps be­cause he wrote it as a trib­ute to his fa­ther, a World War I vet.
