Erika Shernoff & Mike Ferrin

The Washington Post Sunday - - E8 ONLOVE - — Michelle Thomas

Erika Shernoff, 30, works in marketing. Mike Ferrin, 34, is a sports broadcaster. They live in Baltimore.

Wedding date: Nov. 20.

Location: American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore.

Guests: 200.

How they met: Erika contacted Mike after spotting him on Match.com in December of 2008. Since Mike worked evenings and Erika worked days, they met for lunch at King Street Blues in Crystal City.

The proposal: Shortly before New Year’s last year, Mike proposed at home in a low-key moment: After pausing the film “Pineapple Express,” he offered Erika an anniversary gift — a ring from Tiffany’s. “Is this what I think it is?” Erika asked. Mike responded, “No, but this is,” and pulled out the engagement ring, a century-old heirloom that once belonged to Erika’s grandmother.

The wedding: Erika and Mike wanted the event to include delicious food, good music and personal, seasonal details, so they planned an indoor adaptation of an all-American barbecue, hired a Motown cover band, enlisted friends to design their invitations and guestbook, and skipped flowers in lieu of in-season, all-white pumpkins and gourds.

The honeymoon: The newlyweds spent nine days relaxing at Poipu Beach on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
