Israeli troops kill Palestinian at checkpoint
Israeli soldiers at a West Bank checkpoint shot and killed a Palestinian man Saturday when he ran toward them with a suspicious object discovered later to be a pipe bomb, the army said. It was the second fatal shooting at the checkpoint in a week.
Palestinian witnesses said the man, identified asKhaldoun Samoudi, got out of a taxi and ran toward the checkpoint, shouting, “God is Great!” and holding an object in a bag. An army spokesman said soldiers opened fire when the man ignored orders to stop. After he was hit, he was found to be carrying a pipe bomb, another explosive device and a knife, the spokesman said.
Last Sunday, soldiers fatally shot a Palestinian laborer who approached them at the same checkpoint, which is on a road linking the city of Nablus and the Jordan Valley. The army said the man held a glass bottle and was shot according to the army’s rules of engagement.
Also Saturday, mortar rounds fired from the Gaza Strip injured two Thai workers, one seriously, at a kibbutz in southern Israel, the military said.
On Friday night, an Israeli soldier was killed at the Gaza border in a friendly-fire incident. The army said he was struck by a mortar shell fired by troops at Palestinian militants planting explosives near the border fence.
