The Washington Post Sunday - - COMMUTER -

Next weekend, construction related to the Wilson Bridge project will require the complete closure of northbound and southbound Telegraph Road, as well as several Capital Beltway ramps at the Telegraph Road interchange. This is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Friday and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17.

A complete closure is necessary so that the old Beltway bridge over Telegraph Road can be demolished during a single weekend. Project managers strongly advise that travelers plan to use alternative routes while the work is underway.

The District Department of

Transportation plans to close an inbound lane on Chain Bridge daily between 10 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday. The lane closures are needed so construction equipment used during the bridge rehabilitation can be removed. One lane will remain open in each direction for traffic crossing the bridge.

Red Line trains are sharing a single track between Silver

Spring and Forest Glen weekdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. through Jan. 21 while the tracks in that area are being worked on. Because the single-tracking occurs at midday, when the trains are more spread out along the line, riders should not experience

any delays, the transit authority says. (Although there will be plenty of other work zones in place throughout Metrorail on Martin

Luther King Jr. Day, this bit of track work will be suspended for the holiday.)

Drivers should expect to encounter delays for the next several weeks on northbound Route 28 (Nokesville Road) at Wellington Road inManassas, where a lane is closed, the Virginia Department

of Transportation says. Motorists can useGodwin Drive to avoid the work zone.

The lane closure makes room for a $44 million construction project to build a bridge over Wellington Road and eliminate the at-grade railroad crossing. The project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2012.

The National Park Service plans to undertake preservation work and repair the sidewalks on the Arlington Memorial Bridge. The park service says its contractor is making temporary pedestrian bridges to place over the sidewalk areas. Work is underway beneath the bridge.

The park service says that no lanes will be closed during rush hours, although two lanes may need to be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to install those pedestrian bridges over the sidewalk work areas. A minimum of one lane in each direction will remain

open at all times.

Anacostia Drive SE between Good Hope Road and Nicholson Street is scheduled to close from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night starting Monday and continuing through Saturday so that girders can be moved into position for placement into the new 11th Street bridge over the Anacostia River.

All traffic from Howard Road SE will have to exit the park at Good Hope Road during the closings.

The Maryland State Highway

Administration is continuing its bridge inspection program in the D.C. area. Here’s the schedule for the work week ahead:

Monday: On Interstate 70 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks in Frederick County, watch for a single right lane closing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
