Colonials win with late free throws
Tony Taylor scored 20 points to lead five GeorgeWashington players in double figures in a 78-71 victory over host Saint Joseph’s in men’s basketball on Saturday.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for George Washington (9-6, 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference).
The Colonials led by 12 in the second half. The Hawks closed to 58-56 on a three-pointer by C. J. Aiken with 7 minutes 24 seconds to go, but Dwayne Smith answered with six straight points.
Saint Joseph’s (5-10, 0-2) had won four of the teams’ last five meetings. It trailed 73-69 with 32 seconds left, but GW hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds.
BUCKNELL 71, NAVY 64: Senior Darryl Shazier scored 28 points, including five free throws in the final 30 seconds for the visiting Bison (10-7, 1-0 Patriot League) over the Midshipmen (5-12, 0-1).
Freshman J. J. Avila had 23 points in 20 minutes for Navy, though he fouled out with 4:31 remaining. Navy closed to 6260 following two free throws by junior Jordan Sugars but did not get closer.
MORGAN STATE 75, HOWARD 62: Kevin Thompson had his seventh double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the host Bears (6-7, 2-0 MEAC) over the Bison (2-13, 0-2). Morgan State won its eighth in a row over Howard.
Georgetown women fall
Little-used guard GabiMinix drilled a three-pointer in double overtime to give Marquette the lead, and it held on to upset No. 15 Georgetown, 75-73, in a women’s game at McDonough Arena.
Adria Crawford’s two free throws put the Hoyas up 71-69 with 3:43 left.
Minix — a freshman guard averaging 2.6 points — hit an open three from the wing to give Marquette the lead.
Angel Robinson hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles (13-3, 1-2 Big East).
The Hoyas (13-4, 1-2) had their six-game winning streak snapped. They have not beaten Marquette in six tries.
Sugar Rodgers led the way for the Hoyas with 26 points and 10 rebounds, though she fouled out with 1:59 left in the second overtime.
Georgetown appeared to be in control both in regulation and overtime. It led 54-47 with 7:54 remaining in regulation.
MORGAN STATE 56, HOWARD 46: Theresa Davis scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bears (7-6, 2-0 MEAC) at home. Saadia Doyle had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the visiting Bison (3-11, 0-2), who lost their sixth consecutive game.
RICHMOND 68, GEORGE WASHINGTON 55: The Colonials (5-10, 0-1 Atlantic-10) lost their sixth game in a row; this time, they were outscored 3820 in the second half by the Spiders (10-5, 1-0).
The Spiders trailed by four early in the second half. They answered with a 21-0 run over the next 5:37. AMERICAN 64, LEHIGH
51: The Eagles snapped an 18-game home winning streak by the Mountain Hawks (10-6, 0-1 Patriot League). Senior Liz Leer scored 25 points for American (11-4, 1-0).
Overall, American ended the game on a 19-7 run.
