Colo­nials win with late free throws

Tony Tay­lor scored 20 points to lead five Ge­orgeWash­ing­ton play­ers in dou­ble fig­ures in a 78-71 vic­tory over host Saint Joseph’s in men’s bas­ket­ball on Satur­day.

It was the fourth con­sec­u­tive vic­tory for Ge­orge Washington (9-6, 2-0 At­lantic 10 Con­fer­ence).

The Colo­nials led by 12 in the sec­ond half. The Hawks closed to 58-56 on a three-pointer by C. J. Aiken with 7 min­utes 24 sec­onds to go, but Dwayne Smith an­swered with six straight points.

Saint Joseph’s (5-10, 0-2) had won four of the teams’ last five meet­ings. It trailed 73-69 with 32 sec­onds left, but GW hit 5 of 6 free throws in the fi­nal 30 sec­onds.

BUCK­NELL 71, NAVY 64: Se­nior Dar­ryl Shazier scored 28 points, in­clud­ing five free throws in the fi­nal 30 sec­onds for the vis­it­ing Bi­son (10-7, 1-0 Pa­triot League) over the Mid­ship­men (5-12, 0-1).

Fresh­man J. J. Avila had 23 points in 20 min­utes for Navy, though he fouled out with 4:31 re­main­ing. Navy closed to 6260 fol­low­ing two free throws by ju­nior Jor­dan Sug­ars but did not get closer.

MOR­GAN STATE 75, HOWARD 62: Kevin Thomp­son had his sev­enth dou­ble-dou­ble of the sea­son with 15 points and 15 re­bounds to lead the host Bears (6-7, 2-0 MEAC) over the Bi­son (2-13, 0-2). Mor­gan State won its eighth in a row over Howard.

Ge­orge­town women fall

Lit­tle-used guard GabiMinix drilled a three-pointer in dou­ble over­time to give Mar­quette the lead, and it held on to up­set No. 15 Ge­orge­town, 75-73, in a women’s game at McDonough Arena.

Adria Craw­ford’s two free throws put the Hoyas up 71-69 with 3:43 left.

Minix — a fresh­man guard av­er­ag­ing 2.6 points — hit an open three from the wing to give Mar­quette the lead.

An­gel Robin­son hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the vic­tory for the Golden Ea­gles (13-3, 1-2 Big East).

The Hoyas (13-4, 1-2) had their six-game win­ning streak snapped. They have not beaten Mar­quette in six tries.

Sugar Rodgers led the way for the Hoyas with 26 points and 10 re­bounds, though she fouled out with 1:59 left in the sec­ond over­time.

Ge­orge­town ap­peared to be in con­trol both in reg­u­la­tion and over­time. It led 54-47 with 7:54 re­main­ing in reg­u­la­tion.

MOR­GAN STATE 56, HOWARD 46: Theresa Davis scored 15 points to lead the Lady Bears (7-6, 2-0 MEAC) at home. Saa­dia Doyle had 20 points and 10 re­bounds for the vis­it­ing Bi­son (3-11, 0-2), who lost their sixth con­sec­u­tive game.

RICH­MOND 68, GE­ORGE WASHINGTON 55: The Colo­nials (5-10, 0-1 At­lantic-10) lost their sixth game in a row; this time, they were outscored 3820 in the sec­ond half by the Spi­ders (10-5, 1-0).

The Spi­ders trailed by four early in the sec­ond half. They an­swered with a 21-0 run over the next 5:37. AMER­I­CAN 64, LE­HIGH

51: The Ea­gles snapped an 18-game home win­ning streak by the Moun­tain Hawks (10-6, 0-1 Pa­triot League). Se­nior Liz Leer scored 25 points for Amer­i­can (11-4, 1-0).

Over­all, Amer­i­can ended the game on a 19-7 run.
