Get that jolt quick

The Washington Post Sunday - - BUSINESS - — Hayley Tsukayama

At Starbucks, with a flash of your smartphone, you can now pay for the just-unleashed monster, a 31-ounce Trenta.

Starbucks customers, you no longer have to fumble for your wallets to get that coffee. As of this week, you can just scan your phone. Talk about being wired.

The coffee behemoth launched its mobile payment service in recent days, and BlackBerry, iPhone and iPod Touch users can download an app to pay in a flash. The payment zooms through a bar code that pops up on the devices.

Starbucks reports that it launched the service in 6,800 stores and more than 1,000 Starbucks in Target locations across the land.

The service is based on the existing card service and mobile app, which allows customers to manage their card balance, load more money with a major credit card (or PayPal account, for iPhone users) and locate the nearest store. All locations in the Washington area are listed on the site’s mobile map — although tests of the technology at local stores have been hit or miss.

Thinking big: Starbucks has also launched the Trenta, a whopping 31-ounce cup of coffee. Just the thing for those super-charged hours of fun with your latest free app. (See above.)
