So if the big-name companies are cheap and easy, what’s so great about Zipcar?

Zipcar is great when you need a car for an hour or two. But when you’re in the market for a car for a day or two, it’s probably not your best option.

Renting the cheapest Zipcar for 24 weekend hours will cost you nearly four times as much as renting one for the same period from one of the major rental company locations at National Airport. Take into account a $25 application fee to join and either a $60 annual fee or minimum $50 monthly commitment, and you’ll spend at least $75 before you get behind the wheel.

The Zipcar perks — cooler cars than the Chevy Aveo or Ford Focus you’ll get from the other guys, not having to worry about gas or insurance and being able to walk around the corner to pick up your car — just don’t add up for your weekend getaway.
