At least three civilians were killed after being caught in clashes between insurgents and the army in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, a medical official said, adding that 12 other people were wounded by stray bullets. Mogadishu residents endure frequent barrages of mortar and rocket fire during fighting between insurgents— including al-Shabab, the country’s most powerful militant group — and government forces.
Haiti to release election results, sets runoff date:
Haiti’s electoral authorities will release results Wednesday from the disputed presidential election, and they set March 20 as the date for a runoff vote in signs that a protracted electoral impasse may be easing. Political uncertainty has gripped the impoverished country since a chaotic Nov. 28 vote marred by fraud allegations and street protests.
Two escape hijacked vessel:
Two hostages have escaped a German cargo ship captured by Somali pirates off the Seychelles and are aboard a Danish navy vessel, the ship’s owners said. The ship was boarded Jan. 22 far from the areas where pirates mainly operate.
