The Washington Post Sunday - - COMMUTER - — Tom Jackman

An Arlington County man died early Saturday after he lost control of his car and tumbled down a hill near Accotink Creek in the Springfield area of Fairfax County, police said.

Police said Romeo Alexander Arana, 35, of the 1000 block of South Emerson Street, was driving his 1992 Honda Civic west on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway just after 6 a.m.

As the Civic neared the bridge over Accotink Creek, investigators think, Arana lost control of the car on ice and hit a snow embankment, then rode up the embankment and along the railing of the bridge.

The Civic fell off the railing and became airborne, Officer Shelley Broderick said. It rotated and fell 20 feet down a hill before coming to rest near Accotink Creek. Arana was pronounced dead at the scene.

Broderick said it was not known whether any other cars were involved in the accident, but no one else was in the Civic. Investigators do not think that Arana was speeding but have not determined whether alcohol was involved. Police said Arana was not wearing a seat belt.
