Martha J. Mount, who worked for 36 years as a sec­re­tary at the U.S. Depart­ment of Agri­cul­ture, died Jan. 6 at Holy Cross Hos­pi­tal in Sil­ver Spring of res­pi­ra­tory fail­ure. She was 83.

Miss Mount re­tired in 1980 as su­per­vi­sor of the Agri­cul­ture Depart­ment’s di­vi­sion of in­quiries.

Martha Juanita Mount was born and raised in Troy, Ala.

She moved to the Washington area when she was a teenager and lived in the District un­til mov­ing to Sil­ver Spring in 1970.

Miss Mount vol­un­teered at the Cen­ter for the Hand­i­capped in Sil­ver Spring, now known as CHI Cen­ters.

Sur­vivors in­clude her sis­ter, Anne Della Rocca of Mas­s­ape­qua, N.Y.
