A different Super Bowl game plan
For people who don’t love football— or who realize their home team will never reach the Super Bowl until roughly five years from never— Super Bowl Sunday can be a drag. But don’t drown your boredom in seven-layer dip; even the pop culturally attuned can find five reasons to enjoy the NFL’s over-hyped day, which will suck up a ludicrous amount of air time Feb. 6 on Fox.
The Super Bowl red carpet: No event is a really big event unless it involves pretty people standing on a rug the color of valentine hearts. Hence, as it did in 2008, this year’s pre-Super Bowl festivities will feature a celebrity redcarpet segment, hosted byMaria Menounos andMichael Strahan. Which will make it seem like you’rewatching the Oscars, even if everyone around you is discussing Ben Roethlisberger.
Christina Aguilera sings the national
anthem: It should be entertaining to watch the “Burlesque” star belt out “ The Star-Spangled Banner” . . . or at least more entertaining than sitting through the Black Eyed Peas halftime performance.
Celebrities in commercials: Add an element of challenge to all that ad-viewing by attempting to find the celebs in this year’s Super Bowl commercials. We’ll give
you a head start: Kim Kardashian will appear in a Skechers spot, while Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne will shill for Best Buy.
Movie trailers: Among the potential blockbusters getting the expensive promotional treatment are “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Super 8” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” The post-Super Bowl episode of “Glee”: Make it through the whole game and you get a very special episode of “Glee,” featuring members ofNewDirections doing the “ Thriller” dance while dressed as zombie-fied football players. Because the Super Bowl has always cried out for the funk of 40,000 years.
