The Jan. 29 obit­u­ary for former Vir­ginia Supreme Court chief jus­tice Harry L. Car­rico in­cor­rectly re­ferred to Leroy R. Hassell Sr. as the court’s first black jus­tice. John Charles Thomas, ap­pointed in 1983, was the first African Amer­i­can on the court. Hassell joined the high court in 1989 and be­came the first black chief jus­tice of the Vir­ginia Supreme Court in 2003.
