Couple re-gifts wedding lovebirds

The Washington Post Sunday - - THE REGION -

ARLINGTON, Feb. 10. Saying that they no longer had had time to care for lovebirds received as a wedding gift, a couple surrendered a pair of small parrots to the Arlington County animal shelter.

Officials at animal welfare organizations caution against giving pets as gifts since they require a commitment to ownership that goes beyond resources and financial considerations.

With the spring holidays looming, would-be gifters also are advised to find out in advance whether ducklings and baby chicks and bunnies would be an appropriate addition to a home. Among cases received by the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.
