The Washington Post Sunday - - THE REGION - — Peter Hermann

A woman who robbed two Northwest Washington banks 15 minutes apart this month has been arrested and charged in both cases, authorities said Friday.

Mercedes Idalia Romero, 36, of Northwest was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts of bank robbery.

Officials said Romero was arrested about 6 a.m. Friday at her home in Columbia Heights. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier highlighted the case Tuesday during her monthly call-in show on NewsChannel 8, which displayed a picture of the woman.

Police said the first robbery occurred about 9:15 a.m. Feb. 4 at a PNC Bank branch in the 4200 block of Wisconsin Avenue NW in Tenleytown. About 15 minutes later, police said, a woman meeting the same description robbed a Bank of America branch in the 3400 block of Connecticut Avenue NW, about 1.5 miles away in Cleveland Park.
