Cole back to minors

The Washington Post Sunday - - SPORTS -

To make room for right-hander Joe Ross on the 25-man roster, the Nationals optioned righthander A. J. Cole to Class AAA Syracuse.

Cole began the year at Syracuse before he was called up to make his major league debut in late April after Max Scherzer suffered a minor thumb injury.

Cole struggled in that first outing, allowing nine runs in two innings. But he fared better in two long relief outings in May, allowing two runs in 71/ innings. The Nationals recalled Cole on Thursday to serve as a long-relief option after Taylor Jordan made a spot start Wednesday.

Because Ross had not been on the Nationals’ 40-man roster, the team also moved injured reliever Craig Stammen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list, where he will not count against the Nationals’ 40-man limit.

Stammen landed on the disabled list with a torn flexor in mid-April. The injury required surgery that will keep him out for the rest of the season.
