Divers again search for Relisha Rudd
Volunteer divers plunged into the Anacostia River on Saturday to search for missing homeless girl Relisha Rudd.
The divers searched a section of Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Northeast Washington where a previous volunteer search-and-rescue team said dogs picked up the scent of a cadaver and found Kahlil Tatum, 51. Tatum is the D.C. homeless shelter janitor police say abducted Relisha in March 2014 and killed his wife before apparently shooting himself. Police found Tatum’s body in a shed at Kenilworth Park, where authorities concentrated their search for the girl, who was 8 at the time of her disappearance.
Search organizer Brenda Brown said District police collected items that divers discovered to verify whether anything found Saturday is connected to Relisha’s case. She said that would take time.
Relisha was living at the shelter at the former D.C. General Hospital with her family when she vanished more than a year ago. Her disappearance spotlighted the squalid conditions at the shelter and prompted District officials to reexamine how government agencies interact with the families of homeless children in the city.
