Astros: All-star 2B Jose Altuve missed the game against the Mariners with a hamstring injury. He said he doesn’t think the injury is serious. Altuve, who won the batting title last season, is hitting .290 with five homers and 27 RBI for firstplace Houston.
Indians: Cleveland activated RHP Scott Atchison from the DL. Atchison had been out since May 28 with a sprained ankle. He is 1-1 with a 5.74 ERA in 19 games this season.
Mets: New York reacquired OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis from waivers less than a month after trading him to the Angels. Nieuwenhuis appeared in 27 games for the Mets, batting .079 (3 for 38), before being designated for assignment.
Royals: LHP Jason Vargas was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained left forearm.
Twins: Top prospect Byron Buxton was called up to the major leagues. Minnesota announced its plan to select Buxton’s contract from Class AA Chattanooga; he will be in uniform Sunday for the finale of a three-game series in Texas. In Chattanooga, Buxton hit .283 with seven doubles, 12 triples and six home runs. He also had 20 stolen bases and 37 RBI.
