An­them, the na­tion’s sec­ond­largest health in­surer, will ac­quire Cigna in a $48.3 bil­lion deal that will cre­ate the largest pri­vate health in­surer as mea­sured by the num­ber of mem­bers.

AT&T’s $48.5 bil­lion bid to pur­chase DirecTV, a mega deal that joins the coun­try’s largest satel­lite TV firm with the sec­ond-big­gest provider of cel­lu­lar ser­vice, cleared its fi­nal reg­u­la­tory hur­dle.

Ja­panese media com­pany Nikkei is buy­ing the Fi­nan­cial Times as part of a $1.3 bil­lion deal with Bri­tain’s Pear­son. As part of the deal, Pear­son has agreed to sell most of the as­sets in FT Group, in­clud­ing the Fi­nan­cial Times busi­ness daily news­pa­per and the pop­u­lar FT.com.

Lock­heed Martin an­nounced a $9 bil­lion deal to buy Black Hawk he­li­copter man­u­fac­turer Siko­rsky, push­ing fur­ther into the world of mil­i­tary hard­ware de­spite a re­cent slow­down in Pen­tagon spend­ing.
