U.S. Olympic bid in jeop­ardy af­ter its loss to Honduras

The United States un­der-23 men’s na­tional team lost to Honduras, 2-0, on Satur­day in an Olympic qual­i­fiy­ing semi­fi­nal in Sandy, Utah, com­pli­cat­ing the Amer­i­cans’ path to the Rio Games.

Honduras got a goal in each half from Al­berth Elis to key the up­set and book its own Rio spot.

The U.S. team, which fin­ished the group stage 3-0, will now need to win the third-place game Tues­day just to get the chance to play Colom­bia in a play­off for a last­gasp berth.

lEURO QUAL­I­FY­ING: De­spite a 2-0 de­feat to Bos­nia-Herze­gov­ina, Wales se­cured a place at next year’s Euro­pean Cham­pi­onship in France out of Group B thanks to Cyprus’s 2-1 win over host Is­rael.

Sec­onds af­ter the match in Bos­nia ended, Wales learned that the re­sult in Jerusalem had given the coun­try its first in­ter­na­tional tour­na­ment since the 1958World Cup.

“It’s prob­a­bly the best loss ofmy life,” Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale said.

Spain also qual­i­fied, as Santi Ca­zorla and sub­sti­tute Paco Al­cacer scored two goals apiece to help Spain beat Lux­em­bourg, 4-0, in Group C.

Switzer­land, mean­while, routed San Marino, 7-0, in GroupE and will re­turn to the Eu­ros for the first time since co-host­ing the tour­na­ment in 2008.

In Group H, Stephan El Shaarawy ended a three-year drought by scor­ing the win­ning goal as Italy won, 3-1, in Azer­bai­jan to qual­ify for France. Nor­way beat­Malta, 2-0, in Oslo to im­prove its own chances.

The Nether­lands beat host Kaza­khstan, 2-1, but its hopes of es­cap­ing Group A dimmed fur­ther when Tur­key beat the Czech Re­pub­lic, 2-1, in Prague.

MLS: Di­dier Drogba scored on a 30-yard free kick, and Mon­treal beat the host Colorado Rapids, 1-0. The Im­pact ended a two-game slide and tight­ened its hold on the fi­nal play­off spot in the East.
