U.S. Olympic bid in jeopardy after its loss to Honduras
The United States under-23 men’s national team lost to Honduras, 2-0, on Saturday in an Olympic qualifiying semifinal in Sandy, Utah, complicating the Americans’ path to the Rio Games.
Honduras got a goal in each half from Alberth Elis to key the upset and book its own Rio spot.
The U.S. team, which finished the group stage 3-0, will now need to win the third-place game Tuesday just to get the chance to play Colombia in a playoff for a lastgasp berth.
lEURO QUALIFYING: Despite a 2-0 defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Wales secured a place at next year’s European Championship in France out of Group B thanks to Cyprus’s 2-1 win over host Israel.
Seconds after the match in Bosnia ended, Wales learned that the result in Jerusalem had given the country its first international tournament since the 1958World Cup.
“It’s probably the best loss ofmy life,” Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale said.
Spain also qualified, as Santi Cazorla and substitute Paco Alcacer scored two goals apiece to help Spain beat Luxembourg, 4-0, in Group C.
Switzerland, meanwhile, routed San Marino, 7-0, in GroupE and will return to the Euros for the first time since co-hosting the tournament in 2008.
In Group H, Stephan El Shaarawy ended a three-year drought by scoring the winning goal as Italy won, 3-1, in Azerbaijan to qualify for France. Norway beatMalta, 2-0, in Oslo to improve its own chances.
The Netherlands beat host Kazakhstan, 2-1, but its hopes of escaping Group A dimmed further when Turkey beat the Czech Republic, 2-1, in Prague.
MLS: Didier Drogba scored on a 30-yard free kick, and Montreal beat the host Colorado Rapids, 1-0. The Impact ended a two-game slide and tightened its hold on the final playoff spot in the East.
