Woman dies af­ter car strikes traf­fic pole

A Howard County woman was killed shortly af­ter mid­night Satur­day when the ve­hi­cle she was driv­ing struck a traf­fic pole along Georgia Av­enue in Rockville, Mont­gomery County po­lice said.

Pene­lope Ann Gar­land, 68, of the 3500 block of Daisy Lane in Wood­bine, Md., was trans­ported to Sub­ur­ban Hospi­tal, where she was pro­nounced dead, po­lice said.

In a re­lease, po­lice said of­fi­cers were re­spond­ing to a call at about 12:05 a.m. when they ob­served Gar­land’s ve­hi­cle trav­el­ing south­bound on Georgia Av­enue at a high speed with­out its head­lights on. “Be­fore of­fi­cers could take ac­tion, the ve­hi­cle, for rea­sons still un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion, left the road and struck a traf­fic pole at Georgia Av­enue and the [In­ter­county Con­nec­tor],” po­lice said.

The agency asked any­one with in­for­ma­tion to con­tact de­tec­tives with the Col­li­sion Re­con­struc­tion Unit at 240-773-6620.
