Carter, Bu­daj give L.A. all it needs in road win

Jeff Carter doesn’t know where the Los An­ge­les Kings would be with­out goalie Peter Bu­daj. They prob­a­bly could say the same about Carter.

Bu­daj posted his NHL-lead­ing seventh shutout, Carter scored mid­way through over­time and the Kings won their fifth in a row, beat­ing the host Philadel­phia Fly­ers, 1-0, on Satur­day.

Bu­daj, who wasn’t even on the Kings’ ros­ter on open­ing night, ex­tended his score­less streak to 144 min­utes 5 sec­onds. He made 17 saves.

“To be hon­est with you, if he wasn’t play­ing how he is, we wouldn’t be in the po­si­tion we are,” Carter, who be­gan his ca­reer with the Fly­ers, said of Bu­daj.

Anze Ko­pi­tar set up the win­ning goal at 2:35 with a back­hand pass across the crease to Carter, who whizzed a wrist shot off Michal Neu­virth and into the net. It was the 27 th tally of the sea­son for Carter.

Neu­virth made 27 saves for Philadel­phia, in­clud­ing a sen­sa­tional glove stop in the sec­ond pe­riod.

AVALANCHE 5, JETS 2: Jarome Iginla had a goal and an as­sist, and reel­ing Colorado beat vis­it­ing Win­nipeg in Den­ver.

Matt Ni­eto scored twice, and Matt Duch­ene added three as­sists, help­ing the Avalanche stop a nine-game los­ing streak. Nathan MacKin­non and Carl Soder­berg also scored, and Calvin Pickard had 23 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, BRU­INS 5: Wil­liam Ny­lan­der had his first ca­reer hat trick, James van Riems­dyk scored his sec­ond of the game to break a tie with 1:36 left, and Toronto snapped a three­game los­ing streak with a win at Bos­ton.

Con­nor Brown also scored for the Maple Leafs.

SABRES 4, SE­NA­TORS 0: Robin Lehner made 37 saves, Kyle Ok­poso scored his 16th goal, and host Buf­falo beat Ot­tawa to snap a three-game skid.

The Sabres also had goals from Ryan O’Reilly, Sam Rein­hart and Mar­cus Foligno. Jack Eichel had two as­sists.

DEVILS 5, BLUE JACK­ETS 1: Tay­lor Hall scored twice, Travis Za­jac had a goal and an as­sist, and New Jer­sey won at Colum­bus. Ja­cob Josef­son and Seth Helge­son also scored, and Cory Sch­nei­der had 31 saves for the Devils, who won their sixth straight road game.

HUR­RI­CANES 5, IS­LAN­DERS 4 (OT): Ron Hain­sey’s sec­ond goal of the game at 2:08 of over­time lifted Carolina to a road vic­tory over New York.

Ja­cob Slavin, Lee Stemp­niak and Teuvo Ter­a­vainen also scored to help the Hur­ri­canes win their third straight.

LIGHT­NING 3, DUCKS 2 (SO): Brian Boyle scored in the fourth round of the shootout, and Tampa Bay beat vis­it­ing Ana­heim.

Jonathan Drouin and Alex Kil­lorn scored in reg­u­la­tion, Nikita Kucherov had two as­sists, and Ben Bishop made 14 saves for the Light­ning, which won the shootout 3-2.

RED WINGS 1, PREDA­TORS 0: Petr Mrazek made 42 saves, Mike Green scored in the first pe­riod and Detroit won at Nashville.

Mrazek is 5-0-0 in his ca­reer against the Preda­tors.

PEN­GUINS 4, BLUES 1: Sid­ney Crosby had two goals and an as­sist, Marc-An­dre Fleury stopped 22 shots and Pitts­burgh won at St. Louis.

Kris Le­tang and Justin Schultz also scored for the Pen­guins, who are 20-2-2 when Crosby scores a goal.

BLACK­HAWKS 5, STARS 3: Trevor van Riems­dyk put in a re­bound with 4:03 left to lift vis­it­ing Chicago over Dal­las.

Stars goalie Kari Le­hto­nen stopped a close-range shot by Artem Anisi­mov, but van Riems­dyk fol­lowed to put the puck un­der Le­hto­nen and make it 4-3. Jonathan Toews added an empty-net goal in the fi­nal sec­ond.
