What Aus­tralia does for Amer­ica

Re­gard­ing the Feb. 2 front-page ar­ti­cle “Trump badgers leader of Aus­tralia”:

Some­one should re­mind Pres­i­dent Trump that the United States has more to lose by break­ing agree­ments with Aus­tralia than does Aus­tralia. It’s not just that Aus­tralia has sup­ported the United States in ev­ery war since World War I, in­clud­ing Viet­nam, Afghanistan and Iraq, but Aus­tralia also serves as a home for U.S. mil­i­tary bases that pro­vide es­sen­tial in­tel­li­gence for the United States. Many Aus­tralians be­lieve we should shut down these bases. Mr. Trump’s ac­tions have boosted sup­port for that view.
