UDC fac­ulty mem­ber dies a week af­ter fire

John Slack, 75, a fac­ulty mem­ber and ad­min­is­tra­tor at the Univer­sity of the Dis­trict of Columbia, died Fri­day af­ter be­ing crit­i­cally in­jured Feb. 10 in a fire at his home on Capi­tol Hill, ac­cord­ing to au­thor­i­ties.

D.C. po­lice said he was found suf­fer­ing from burns in front of the house in the 700 block of Mary­land Av­enue NE af­ter a fire was re­ported there about 5 a.m.

The fire has been ruled ac­ci­den­tal, said Rachel Reid, a po­lice spokes­woman.

A sec­ond man was crit­i­cally in­jured in the fire.

UDC lists Slack as the holder of a doc­tor­ate and the di­rec­tor of pub­lic health and health ed­u­ca­tion in the univer­sity’s Col­lege of Agri­cul­ture, Ur­ban Sus­tain­abil­ity and En­vi­ron­men­tal Sciences.

A neigh­bor on Mary­land Av­enue de­scribed Slack as a “good man with a big heart.”
