UDC faculty member dies a week after fire
John Slack, 75, a faculty member and administrator at the University of the District of Columbia, died Friday after being critically injured Feb. 10 in a fire at his home on Capitol Hill, according to authorities.
D.C. police said he was found suffering from burns in front of the house in the 700 block of Maryland Avenue NE after a fire was reported there about 5 a.m.
The fire has been ruled accidental, said Rachel Reid, a police spokeswoman.
A second man was critically injured in the fire.
UDC lists Slack as the holder of a doctorate and the director of public health and health education in the university’s College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences.
A neighbor on Maryland Avenue described Slack as a “good man with a big heart.”
