The Washington Post Sunday - - COLLEGE BASKETBALL - Jalen Brunson Guard, Villanova

The sophomore point guard, above, scored 22 points on 7-for-7 shooting from the field and added a careerhigh 10 assists in No. 2 Villanova’s 9270 rout of Seton Hall. Brunson is the first college player in the last 20 seasons with at least 20 points, 10 assists and no missed field goals in a game, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Miami’s NCAA tournament hopes appeared to be in trouble when senior guard Ja’Quan Newton was given a threegame suspension by Coach Jim Larranaga. Saturday’s 71-65 win over Clemson improved the Hurricanes to 2-0 without Newton (15 points, 3.6 assists per game) and 18-8 overall. Nothing is assured with games at Virginia, against Duke and at Virginia Tech and at Florida State to close the regular season, but staying on the bubble is as much as they could have hoped for.

Florida State flew through its toughest stretch of the season, going 5-1 in six consecutive games against ranked ACC foes. Since then, however, the Seminoles have gone 3-4, including Saturday’s 80-66 loss at Pittsburgh, to fall to 21-6 overall and 9-5 in the conference. What’s odd is the inconsistency of that stretch, which has included just one game against a top 25 team: wins by 18, 48 and 24 points; losses by 22, 10, 12 and 14.
