Down 25, Black Knights come back to beat Mids
Jordan Fox scored 22 points and made a career-high five threepointers, including a go-ahead three late that helped Army overcome a 25-point deficit to beat rival Navy, 71-68, on Saturday in Annapolis.
Up nine at halftime, the Midshipmen opened the second half with a 10-0 run and led by 25 with 12:51 left after going on a 21-5 run.
Mac Hoffman hit Army’s first field goal of the half at 12:40, and the Black Knights gained ground on an 11-2 run capped by Thomas Funk’s three-pointer and closed to 65-64 on Fox’s lay-in with 2:01 left.
Hasan Abdullah’s layup put Navy ahead 67-64 with 40 seconds left. John Emzie hit two free throws to cut Army’s deficit to one, and the Black Knights got a stop.
Fox hit a three for a 69-67 Army lead with 19 seconds left. Navy’s Shawn Anderson made one of two free throws, Funk split a pair of free throws, and Abdullah missed a jumper with two seconds left that would have tied the score. Army’s Mac Hoffman made one of two free throws for the final margin.
Funk scored 14 points for Army (11-17, 5-11 Patriot), and Hoffman added 11 and 10 rebounds. The Black Knights hit 10 of 24 threepointers in winning for the fourth time against the Mids in 10 tries.
Abdullah scored 18 points for Navy (15-13, 10-6), which shot only 3 for 17 on three-pointers.
HOWARD 84, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 53: Charles Williams scored 25 points as the Bison (7-20, 4-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) kept the Aggies (2-25, 0-12) winless against Division I opponents this season with a victory at Burr Gymnasium.
Damon Collins added a seasonhigh 21 points for Howard.
Navy women defeat Army
Sarita Condie scored 21 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career as the Navy women defeated Army, 67-62, in Annapolis.
Condie, a senior guard from Lovelock, Nev., has 1,010 career points.
The Mids (20-6, 13-2 Patriot League) won their fourth in a row. Aliyah Murray had 20 points, 11 rebounds and five steals for the Black Knights (19-7, 10-5).
GEORGE WASHINGTON 80, GEORGE MASON 49: Lexi Martins had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lift the Colonials (19-8, 12-3 Atlantic 10) past the Patriots (13-15, 6-9) at Smith Center.
Jacy Bolton had 14 points and 10 rebounds for George Mason.
HOLY CROSS 51, AMERICAN 46: Lauren Crisler had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles (12-14, 9-6 Patriot League), but they fell to the Crusaders (7-19, 5-10) in Worcester, Mass.
HOWARD 69, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 61: Sydni Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Bison (1212, 8-4 MEAC) beat the Aggies (11-14, 7-5) at Burr Gymnasium.
