No question about it: Lehner’s teammates respond to challenge
SABRES 3, BLUES 2
Goaltender Robin Lehner and the Buffalo Sabres have been on a roll since Lehner questioned his teammates’ commitment a week ago. Lehner stopped 16 shots in the third period and 37 overall, and the Sabres snapped the visiting St. Louis Blues’ six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory on Saturday.
“I don’t think it’s about spark. As I said before, it’s the small, minor details that’s been hurting us,” Lehner said. “It’s not been many times this year where I felt we could complain about our effort. Slowly but surely, we’re starting to put it together.”
Lehner had a far different reaction following a 4-2 loss to Vancouver on Feb. 12. He challenged his teammates to look themselves in the mirror and said coaches and fans deserved better.
The Sabres responded by rallying for a 3-2 win at Ottawa on Tuesday. They followed with a 2-0 win over Colorado on Thursday.
JETS 3, CANADIENS 1: Patrik Laine and Winnipeg spoiled Coach Claude Julien’s return to Montreal. Laine and Mathieu Perreault each had a goal and an assist.
“We knew we were going to have everything thrown at us in the first period,” Jets captain Blake Wheeler said.
The Canadiens fired coach Michel Therrien on Tuesday and hired Julien in hopes of getting their season back on track. Julien also coached Montreal from 2003 to 2006. But Julien’s first game back was more of the same for the first-place Canadiens.
DEVILS 3, ISLANDERS 2: Cory Schneider made 40 saves, and Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist for New Jersey in Newark. Schneider also stopped a penalty shot by New York’s John Tavares.
OILERS 3, BLACKHAWKS 1: Cam Talbot made 38 saves, and Connor McDavid scored his 20th goal for Edmonton. Matt Benning and Milan Lucic also scored for the Oilers in Chicago in the opener of their season-high six-game road trip. McDavid leads the NHL in points.
SENATORS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 3: Mark Stone had a goal and four assists, and Derock Brassard added two goals and an assist for Ottawa in Toronto.
SHARKS 4, COYOTES 1: Brent Burns scored two goals, and Aaron Dell had a career-high 36 saves to lift San Jose to its first win this season over last-place Arizona in Glendale, Ariz.
STARS 4, LIGHTNING 3 (OT): Antoine Roussel had his first career hat trick for host Dallas, and Jamie Benn scored 3:47 into overtime to beat Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay dominated overtime until Benn passed to Cody Eakin, took a return pass and sent a shot past Andrei Vasilevskiy.
WILD 5, PREDATORS 2: Jason Zucker scored two goals and added an assist for Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn. The Western Conference-leading Wild surpassed last season’s total with its 39th win. Colin Wilson and P.K. Subban scored for Nashville.
Sabres goalie Robin Lehner made 16 saves in the third period, including this one on Jori Lehtera.
