Gallaudet’s season ends with NEAC semifinal loss
MORRISVILLE ST. 72, GALLAUDET 68
The Gallaudet men’s basketball team, which set a program record for wins this season in pursuit of its first conference championship since 1943, was upset by Morrisville State, 72-68, in the semifinals of the North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament on its campus in Northeast D.C.
The Bison finished the season with a 20-6 overall record, 18-2 in NEAC play, earning the right to host the conference tournament as the top seed for the first time. One of those two regular season conference losses, however, had come against Morrisville State.
Gallaudet, which has never qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament, had a chance to tie in the final 10 seconds Saturday, but a three-point attempt fell well short. The Mustangs, of Morrisville, N.Y., then converted 1 of 2 free throws with two seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Andy Cruz scored 25 points with 11 rebounds for Gallaudet in the loss. Senior Joshua McGriff, who earlier in the week was named an all-conference player for the second time, had 11 and eight.
AMERICAN 64, LOYOLA (MD.) 62: Charlie Jones’s only field goal in 40 minutes on the floor was a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to give the Eagles a win in Baltimore.
Delante Jones had three threes and led American (8-21, 5-13 Patriot) with 15 points, and Matt Cimino added 12.
Cam Gregory scored 20 points with 12 rebounds for the Greyhounds (14-15, 8-10).
RHODE ISLAND 69, VCU 59: Jared Terrell scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in Kingston, R.I., and Rhode Island (19-9, 11-5 Atlantic 10) snapped VCU’s nine-game winning streak.
Jonathan Williams scored 14 points for VCU (23-6, 13-3), which dropped into second place, a game behind No. 1 Dayton, which it will face Wednesday.
RICHMOND 70, FORDHAM 48: De’Monte Buckingham scored 19 points with five threepointers, and the Spiders (17-11, 11-5 Atlantic 10) went 27 for 54 from the field in New York.
Antwoine Anderson led Fordham (13-16, 7-9) with 16 points.
BUCKNELL 82, NAVY 60: Kimbal Mackenzie had 18 points and seven assists to help the Bison (23-8, 15-3 Patriot League) cruise in Lewisburg, Pa.
Hasan Abdullah led the Mids (15-15, 10-8) with 18 points, making 8 of 11 free throws.
NORFOLK STATE 73, HOWARD 65: Jonathan Wade hit a pair of three-pointers down the stretch, and the host Spartans (1514, 12-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic) bounced back after having their 10-game winning streak snapped.
Charles Williams hit five threepointers and finished with 28 points to lead Howard (7-22, 4-10).
