A security officer at a store in the giant Potomac Mills shopping center in Prince William County was stabbed and fatally wounded Saturday in a confrontation with a shoplifting suspect, the county police said.

The victim was identified as Larry Donnell Drumgole, 44, of the Rappahannock County, Va., area.

The confrontation came at about 2:30 p.m. as the suspect was leaving the Burlington Coat Factory store at the mall, police said.

According to police, the man “was observed shoplifting” inside the store.

It is located in the Woodbridge area of the county, near Interstate 95, about 25 miles southwest of the District.

Two security officers confronted the man as he left the store, the police said. The encounter continued in or near the large parking area in front of the store.

During the confrontation, a struggle broke out, police said.

Drumgole was stabbed, and the assailant ran, according to police.

Drumgole was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, the police said.

They said the second security officer was uninjured.

Police said they obtained a warrant for Jamel Carlos Kingsbury, 35, of no fixed address.

They said they identified him through an unrelated call earlier Saturday about a domestic matter. He remained at large Saturday night, police said.

Potomac Mills describes itself as Virginia’s largest outlet mall, with more than 200 stores. In addition to this area, its website said it serves guests from all over.

Burlington’s website called the chain an off-price retailer of high-quality apparel and home products.

It was not clear what allegedly was taken. Also unknown was whether a knife was found.
